  • Essaouira (formerly Mogador) is a charming and relaxed little 18th-century city set upon a beautiful bay. For those travellers who like to stroll about on their own terms without the element of hassle, this is perhaps the best it gets. History, architecture, bazaars sunny cafés... it is all here. As are canon-lined "skalas" by the sea, a bustling fishing port and wide beaches that stretch for miles around the bay dotted with windsurfers who have made this often-breezy spot their own. It is a place to try and take it all in or just relax and watch the world and the gulls glide by.
